- laxatives
Excellent article, Lori. The most important thing I used to start with when I used to have clients addicted to ex-lax (another career ago), was that laxatives stimulate the area nearest the colon, after most calories have been absorbed anyway. Not to say that there are good ways and bad ways to have an eating disorder, but that stopping a self-induced misuse of meds is an important first step.

In response to dependent on laxatives posted by lily30: I'm sorry to hear that you're struggling with laxative abuse. Because it has been 3 years, it is imperative that you see a Doctor about it. I know you probably don't want anyone to know, but a professional must test whether you have done any permanent damage. Once taken care of physically, it's best to also see a therapist in order to deal with the underlying issues. Are you restricting and purging? Binging? Trying to lose weight?

- Laxative abuse
Hi, I would like to know if there is anyone out there that has or is still dealing with laxative abuse. I have been abusing laxatives for over three years now. I grew up fat, and was teased a lot. When I reached high school I decided to go on a diet. The diet only led me to thinking I was still fat and it led me to become anorexic. I am no longer an anorexic but still fall off the wagon here and there. Taking laxatives makes me feel better. I know you can't lose weight from them, but I am really terrifed to stop and don't know where to turn. Can some one help? Thanks.

In response to Laxative abuse posted by driven25: After 3 years of using laxatives, it's really important to see your Doctor about it to check if any problems have been caused physically. Trying to use less and less laxatives will help your body get off of them more naturally, and drinking water to keep you hydrated. Try to occupy yourself with other important things after a meal so that you don't feel the urge to use laxatives so strongly. Hopefully then you can stop using them altogether.
