Interested new communities have signed on to help teen's body image by providing training to reduce the rate of eating disorders in youth.

The issue of teen’s body image is a bumpy one. Fortunately, new communities have committed to be a part of training that will, hopefully, reduce the rate of eating disorders in youth.

Jessie's Hope Society has received funding to go ahead with their Loving Yourself Girls Project. The training by Sandra Friedman begins this fall and things have already begun blossoming.

The aim of the project, based on Sandra Friedman's work with adolescent girls, is to create a body-positive society. By educating young people about decoding "fat talk," strengthening their sense of self, among many other crucial skills, we can begin creating community members who accept and recognize the beauty in all body shapes.

The society is setting up an advisory committee to assist in ensuring the project progresses as planned. The initial group has had their first meeting and will meet again in October. Youth will be encouraged to join and will help round out the background and experience of the group, helping to improve the feelings of teen’s body image.

There are now 9 communities that will be participating:

  • Williams Lake
  • Prince George
  • Kimberely
  • Cranbrook
  • North Shore
  • Fraser South
  • Maple Ridge
  • Sunshine Coast
  • North Island

The next steps are to connect with the people in those communities who are interested in participating and scheduling Sandra's training visits.

This project is a huge step towards living in a society where people of every size are treated equally. If we can foster self-confidence and knowledge in people, that's when change will really happen.
