Finding professional help can be the hardest, yet most important step an individual can take in recovering from an eating disorder.

Although most of us like to figure things out on our own, it is imperative to find a therapist that you feel comfortable with. This person will give you the tools you need to help you navigate your way to health. Therefore, you need to feel that you can be 100% open with them.

There are many qualified professionals out there, some who specialize in eating disorders. These are the ones you want to find, as they have studied the behaviours of people with disordered eating. Remember, not only do you need to feel relaxed with them, but they have to be able to relate to what you are feeling.

You might luck out and connect with the first therapist you meet, or you may have to speak with a few before making your decision. Most professionals offer a free introductory session where you go in and see if you feel comfortable with them. This is a great way to get a feel for their philosophy- listen to your gut reaction after you leave the office, as this is usually the best indicator of whether or not this person will be a good match.

Financial considerations are also another thing to think about. Some therapists are covered by insurance, while others are not, and some work on a sliding scale. Depending on what you can afford, it is always best to speak with as many different professionals as possible. You need to keep searching until you meet the "right" one.

Above all, after meeting with a potential therapist, ask yourself how you feel: can you imagine telling this person about the behaviours you hide from everyone else? Will you feel supported each time you visit him/her? Did you like the atmosphere they presented? YOU are in control of each session, so make sure you feel confident enough with this person to be able to set boundaries and be honest. They are there to help you, and with patience and courage, you will get better.
